Part of the fun of traveling for me is getting to try the different foods in an area. Sure we may have tried these food before, but there’s something about eating them in their origin city that makes them taste even better. Over the summer Mike and I escaped to New Orleans for a long weekend and iRetreat. I was a first timer to NOLA, and very excited to try the cuisine. So I’m sharing what and where to eat in New Orleans.

6 Things to Eat in New Orleans

I did a lot of searching and asking about the different foods I should try. So I decided to pull together 6 things to eat your 1st (or every) visit to New Orleans.

beignets Cafe Du Monde

Cafe Du Monde
This is probably the most known place, and it’s totally worth an early morning visit for a Cafe A Lait and Beignets. I recommend you get there early otherwise you’ll be waiting in line. These beignets were so tasty and fresh and the powdered sugar was everywhere!

Pralines

Pralines
These candies made from sugar, cream and Louisiana pecans is a must. I personally really enjoyed watching them being made at Aunt Sally’s right next to Cafe Du Monde.

Muffuletta

Muffuletta
This sandwich is probably my favorite thing. You’ve got to go to The Central Grocery for it, and you can get a whole or half sandwich (still enough for 2 people). It’s 3 kinds of meats (salami, mortadella, ham) 2 kinds of cheese (mozzarella, provolone) and a delicious chunky olive salad on a round sesame seed muffuletta roll.

Po Boy

Po Boy
We made a point to head to Johnny’s Po Boy, the oldest shop in the world and a big part of NOLA history. Lots of varieties from shrimp, crawfish and many more options.

SnoBall

Sno-Ball
This is the sweetest, fluffiest, coolest treat you can get in town. It’s different from a snow cone because of the way the ice is shaved and oh so tasty. This is what you need to keep cool in the heat.

Creole Cuisine

Creole Cuisine
It doesn’t matter is you try the Gumbo, Jambalaya or any type of Creole food. At least try it, because you’re in the city that knows how to make it!

I feel like I was only just starting to scrape away at the list of foods to try, but these are a must for a 1st visit, and I’m already trying to figure out how I can get back to get a Muffuletta sandwich again.
