I’m all grown up with my own family, but there’s something special about having a date with my Dad.

My Dad asked me if I wanted to go to breakfast with him on Friday morning, and told me he would fly me to Cambridge, MD where he goes with his friends.  I immediately said yes, despite having to wake up at 6:30am.

Something you have to understand is my Dad has always flown planes.  Growing up this is where he would spend evenings.  Working on building his own Ultralights in the garage or flying in the cool summer nights.  I can remember watching him fly as kid and thinking it was the most amazing thing ever.  He was the coolest dad.  The only downside was he never had a 2 seater plane.

As we headed to the airport I was so excited.  I watched him prep his plane, meet some friends and the next thing I knew we were on the runway ready to go.

Within seconds were up in the air and I was watching the world below me at 3,500 feet.  I was on the headset listening to them talk and communicate and then my Dad asked if I wanted to fly.  Of course I said yes and for 5 minutes I was the pilot keeping it straight and having a blast.

The flight each way was only 15 minutes, but the experience and time with my Dad was worth more than he’ll ever know.

Thanks for letting me be your inaugural co-pilot Dad, and next time I call dibs on the Bose headset!
