I made some great friends in my 20’s and am very thankful that facebook is around to keep me updated on what’s going on in their world and life. Since I moved to NYC/NJ I don’t get to see these friends as often as I would like. For the most part we all live on the East Coast, but don’t get together like we want.
Around Valentines’ Day I got a Valentine from one of my best friends Jen. It was completely unexpected and totally made my day. She wrote a little note and found a great card and I was instantly taken into a moment from when we used to go to the beach on Monday nights for sushi and Kristen and Richie O. at the Lighthouse. All because she sent me a card, I took a moment and thought about our friendship and memories, instead of cleaning, work or bathtime. We don’t get to chat too much and while we get to see each other probably once a year this small gesture really made me smile and value her friendship even more.
Then last week I was in a class and I got a text message from my former roommate, Chris, telling me he and another friend were in town and if I had time they would love to hang out. It also didn’t hurt that we were only a few blocks away so we met up and talked about life and how we’ve changed and our days together at the beach and in our old house. We also went to FAO Schwarz to check out the toys and just enjoy spending time together. The best part for me was the hug hello, since we don’t really see each other very often.
I love that the digital world keeps me up to date, but nothing will beat small gestures from friends and spending time together. I used to mail letters and cards all the time, but haven’t even sent my best friends birthday cards for the past few years. It’s been a phone call or (gasp) text message.
While our life changes and we find we have “no time” to do anything I’m going to make a point to make the time to stay connected with my friends who I cherish. While I wish I cound send them flowers or candy or fun little gifts I see that are perfect for them I have to stay on my budget and making cards or writing a letter is something that’s affordable and cherished.
The next time you think about a friend who you haven’t talked to in a while, I encourage you to take the time to send them a note, it’s amazing how much joy they will get and how good it’ll make you feel.
