As a working mother out of the home mother I’ve always been very open to my kids about where I am every day. Working in the city I’m lucky that both jobs, Blue Man Group and the blog, are open about me bringing the kids to work every so often. Last week was “take a child to work day” and I decided to bring Eleanor for a fun and eventful day.
I prefer not to tell her in advance that she’s coming into the city with me. It’s much more fun to surprise her. So when she came into my room I told her “You get to spend the day working with Mommy!” and her smile grew even bigger.
From the second we walk out of the house she’s on a mission. “Do we take the Jitney?” Yep! Then we take NJ Transit and finally the subway. What she didn’t know was we weren’t just doing Blue Man, we were spending the morning at TTPM’s Spring/Summer Event checking out the hot toys and “working”
Listening to their Hot Toy picks just got her more and more excited, between TMNT’s, Superheros, Star Wars and Paw Patrol (for her brother) she was gasping, and jumping to see and play with them. Our first stop was the Vuly Trampoline. We got to jump on this new design that’s safer and has no springs. Crazy, but it was tons of fun and we got tons of height. I like that it comes in 3 sizes so you don’t have to have a huge one, but I would love to have one of these in my backyard.

We saw everything from Ant Farms (it’s celebrating its 60th Anniversary) to Insects Galore Butterfly Project (It’s Deal of the Day on Amazon today). We ate edible Candylicious bubbles that really did taste like candy and we had fun chasing.
Play-Doh is also celebrating its 60th birthday and the new little towns they’ve come out with are cute and so detailed. I think the firestation in my favorite.
Of course we also saw some Captain America, and Iron Man gear and since Hasbro had the superhero bus we had to check it out.
I think the one that surprised me was how much she loved Hot Wheels. Playing with this toy you’re using a lot more than your imagination, there’s a lot of science and skill. Great for boys and girls. She’s had me add this to her wish list and I love that it’s a timeless toy!
The toy which I think brought us the most laughs was Wet Head. I’ll have a full review coming soon, but don’t wait, order this now, it’s going to be fun for kids, adults, at parties, or just hanging out.
There were so many fun and awesome things we got to see and play with, but after lunch we needed to head into the other office. I know it’s not as exciting as playing with toys, but I think working at Blue Man is pretty fun.
One thing is for certain the second she gets in she wants to sit in my seat, and work on the computer. She also always reaches for the headset, and wants to roam through the conference rooms and pretty much say hi to anyone who comes my way.
Bringing my kids to work is important to me. I want them to understand that I love what I do both at Blue Man and blogging. It’s not always toys, trampolines, and marshmallows. It’s hard work, and some late nights. It’s juggling between NYC & NJ. It’s knowing when to take off the work hat, and put on the mom hat. It’s balancing life and that’s something I’m always working to do, but so lucky to have an amazing support system to help me.
As we rode the train home I knew she had a great day. I will cherish the chances I get to share with her like this and hope that when it’s time for her to work, she’ll remember coming into the city with me and think of it as an inspiration, to remember to do what you love!
The TTPM Spring/Summer Showcase is a media event I was invited to. I did receive a gift bag for attending. All thoughts are my own.
