When I moved to NYC 5 years ago I was excited about living in the city, but I also knew in my mind there was an expiration.  At that time I thought the expiration would be when we decided to have a family.  I remember saying many a times, “I don’t want to be 8 months pregnant and dealing with the subway stairs.” HA! Then we decided we wanted to start a family and when the idea of leaving the city came up I said NO.  I would have my 1st child in the city and we could move when we decided to have the 2nd baby, but then we found out about #2 and the conversation came up again about leaving the city but we agreed that we love our jobs and living here so we would stay a little longer.

There are times when we find ourselves hating the hustle and bustle, avoiding Times Square and Rockefeller Center as much as possible and hunkering down in our apt once we’re in/home just because we don’t want to deal with the subway.  But when people come to visit us we accept the fact that they want to see and do as much as possible, and we navigate our way through the crowds and streets.

This past week Mike’s step-mom (Gail) came to town and while she doesn’t get out here too often she’s never been our here at Christmas so her list of things to do has been interesting.  There are certain things you just can’t get anywhere else and she’s reminded me of this.

The first thing we did was see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.  There’s nothing like Radio City it is one of the most amazing spaces and the history behind it and with the Rockettes celebrating 85 years we were giddy with excitement.  (Fun Fact:  Growing up my dream job was to be a Rockette, sadly I’m too short)

After the show we went to Rockefeller Center so she could see the tree, and the ice skating rink and angels.  The Center and ice rink aren’t very large, so it’s always surprising when people see it in person, but the tree is HUGE and with the lights and star it can be breathtaking (FYI:  There are no ornaments on the tree only lights!) What was even better was they cleared the ice except for a couple and you guessed it we got to see him get down on one knee and propose.  With hundreds of people watching, cheering, clapping and capturing it on their phones it made me smile.

NYC is a special city, and while I may hate the tourists in my way while I’m trying to get to work, or pick the kids up from school I have to stop and enjoy the moments around me, the window displays in front of me and the magic this city brings to Christmas.
