Day of the Dead Party

My kids love learning about different cultures and how they celebrate holidays so this year we’re taking some time to learn about November 1st which is also known as Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos and we’re having a party.

If you are unfamiliar with this Mexican celebration it’s to remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. I remember learning about this when I was in Spanish class in High School and when I saw Disney Pixars Coco coming out this November I knew it was something we should start talking about with the kids. I pulled together some of my favorite supplies from Oriental Trading and decided to invite the grandparents over to celebrate and learn more about our families.

For our party I focused on the sugar skulls as part of our activity, an iconic part of the Dia de los Muertos party I ordered a dozen blank skulls from Oriental Trading and pulled together different permanent markers so the adults could decorate their own skulls.

As we sat around talking and decorating we talked about past generations and family.

I wanted the younger kids to have something to do as well so I also got some skull wreaths they could color and scratch away skulls. As they sat around listening to us chat about family no longer with us it was great to build these memories together.

We decided to order food from a local restaurant to have authentic foods, but here’s 15+ Recipes that are great for a Day of the Dead party.

As we get excited for Disney Pixars Coco I decided to let it inspire our dessert and made a cake based off the guitar that’s featured in the film. You can check out the full instructions in this Coco Guitar Cake post.

Of course I also love to dress the part and when I saw this Lindy Bop dress I snatched it up. We all wore some flowers in our hair from Oriental Trading while we decorated our sugar skulls and really got into the mood with some traditional music playing in the background.

Overall it was a wonderful party to celebrate and something I can see us doing every year.
