Potty Time

How do you know when your toddler is ready for toilet training?  This is a question that I’ve been asking for a while.  Eleanor started to show signs of wanting to go potty around 18 months, but since daycare wouldn’t help till she was 2 I felt the process would be a waste of time.  Plus we didn’t want her to regress when baby brother arrived.  So we waited.

 

Since I’m on maternity leave and I was headed down to my parents house for a week we decided to go ahead and get Eleanor trained.  Since she’s been using the potty off and on for the past 6 months the concept wasn’t foreign to her.  It also helped that we put big girl Elmo undies on her, and had Lovey’s encouragement.

 

We explained that she needs to let us know when she has to go and that there would be some accidents.  We also kept asking her every 2 hours if she had to go, and even if she said no we would put her on the pot and ask her to try.  Having success more times then not. We even ventured out on day 2 without a diaper, and she used the bathroom twice.

 

We’ve been working on sleeping through the night, and she’s doing really great.  I’ve gotten her up a few times and had her go, and we’ve had a few wakeups, but it’s all coming together really great.

 

I think the hardest thing is going to be the adjustment of going out with a toddler who needs to have a bathroom at a moments notice in NYC.  We downloaded some apps to help us find the closest bathroom, and we’ll pack extra clothes, but we have to remind ourselves that this is new to both her and us.

 

I won’t lie, my mom was great in helping her and I to understand what and how to do this.  She also really helped out when I was distracted with Camden.  I know we’ll have setbacks, but I’m so proud of Eleanor and thankful to my mom.  We’ve been diaper free for a week now and I’m happy to say I won’t be ordering anymore for Eleanor!  Woo-hoo!
