There’s a lesson to be learned for both parents and kids about responsibility. We want our kids to enjoy life and as Mary Poppins says “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun!”  so why not make something that shows both.  I think this is the perfect start!

Mike asked me to help him create a Chore/Task Chart for the kids.  He just wanted to do it on a piece of paper, but of course I had to take it to the next level.  I wanted something that was able to change easily and that the kids would get excited about marking off once the task or chore was completed.   So here it is our Chore & Task Chart with a Tutorial on how to make one your self.

Supplies needed:
-Cookie sheet (I got mine at Walmart)
-Chalkboard paint
-large glass beads (I got mine at the Dollar Tree)
-modpodge
-paper and or fabric
-magnets
-hot glue gun
-chalk markers

How to make the magnets:

Step 1:  Clean the beads and let them dry
Step 2:  Cut the paper and or fabric.  Use the bead and trace around what you want to cut out.

Step 3:  Lightly coat the back of the bead with modpodge and put the paper or fabric on the bead

Step 4:  After the modpodge dries hot glue a magnet to the back

What I really love about this was how personalized our magnets are; I took scraps of fabric from dresses I’ve made, an NYC subway map with our old subway stops, and fun paper.  As time goes on I may make certain magnets involving the kids interests or upcoming holiday.  You can use anything!

How to make the Chart:

Step 1:  Paint the cookie sheet with chalkboard paint.

Step 2:  Figure out what your list of chores/tasks will be and write it on the board with chalk markers (side note:  you can use chalk, but I find that the markers give a cleaner look and don’t smudge when the kids touch it, which they will)

Step 3:  Hang in an area the kids can reach (we used the 3M Velcro strips to stick it to our kitchen cabinet)
Step 4: Add the personalized magnets and let the checking off begin!

I also love that our chart isn’t just chores, personally my favorite is give hugs and kisses, but it also makes combing hair a lot easier when we get to check it off.

Do you have a chore/task list for your family/kids?  What kind of chores/tasks would you add?
