What is it about kids and the refrigerator?

My kids have always enjoyed the fridge as a toy.  It doesn’t matter that they have toy fridges or a play kitchen.  They want the real thing.

I can remember Eleanor hanging out in the fridge, so I finally gave her a sponge and put her to work.  Her infatuation with the fridge has died out, but Camden is showing no signs of moving on.

From the moment he learned that he could open the door we have constantly found him “hanging out” in the fridge.

My mind immediately goes to a Punky Brewster episode where Cherie gets stuck in the fridge playing hide and seek and almost dies.  So I’m constantly telling him that we don’t play in the fridge and that the ledge isn’t made for him to stand on it.

When all is quiet I’ll ask Eleanor to check on him and she usually reports back with “That stinkers in the fridge again.”

What’s makes this even worse is now he’s taking things out.  The other day I heard a break and walked around the corner to find my correlware in pieces on the floor, along with the delicious lamb I was planning to eat for lunch.  Then today I looked and he’s eating a stick of butter.

I don’t want to put a lock on the fridge, because I like that the kids can grab a snack when they want and I don’t want to fight with the fridge to get it open.  So I’ll continue to sneak up on my little man and scare him, or watch his little head peak out and think that soon he won’t be able to or want to get in the fridge because like all things; he’ll grow out of this phase and I’ll cherish this memory and the fact that our electric bill just went down!

Did your kids every hang out in the fridge or am I alone on this one?
