If you’re a Harry Potter fan than you know that Quidditch is the game where wizards soar, and one of the goals of the game is to catch the Golden Snitch. When my family decided to make Harry Potter a Halloween theme. I wanted to do something different, so we made a DIY Golden Snitch Costume.

As a family picking who we would be was tough. There are so many amazing choices, but in the end we went with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley (playing Quidditch) and the Golden Snitch.

Since our youngest wanted to be the snitch, I needed to come up with something that would be easy for him to wear and me to make. A friend game me the idea to use the half foam balls and I was set.

How to make a Golden Snitch Costume

Supplies Needed:

2 half foam balls (12 inches)
Gold spray paint (make sure it will work on foam)
Caulk
Ribbon
Shirt (white or ivory color)
1/2 yard ivory organza fabric
Silver sharpie

Step 1: Draw out the design on the foam balls. Make sure you match them up as you draw, but I just eyed the design from our toy golden snitch.

Step 3: Spray paint the balls gold. A few things to note: the foam will disintegrate a little. It will also absorb so you’ll need to do a few layers.

Step 4: Once dry you’ll want to measure where to put the ribbon so you can wear them. Keep in mind you need enough space for your head to fit through. Then hot glue and I recommend using tacks to keep the ribbon in place.

DIY Golden Snitch WingsStep 5: The snitch wings. Cut the wing shape from the organza. I liked that this fabric made the wings feel like they were moving event though they weren’t.

Step 6: Take a silver sharpie and add an outside line and use college ruled paper to make lines throughout the fabric.

Step 7: Sew the wings onto the shirt, or hot glue is sewing isn’t your thing.

Step 8: For an extra look add a little gold hair spray.

It may seem like a lot of steps but it really didn’t take very long at all to make. It can be done in a day. It’s the waiting for things to dry that takes the time.

For me having the 3D golden snitch was the perfect compliment to our Harry Potter costumes. It also matched our family since we’re always trying to catch our son.

It also worked out well that I went as Ginny Weasley playing Quidditch so making a DIY Golden Snitch Costume seemed like a perfect fit. We got a lot of compliments on our costumes, and the golden snitch was the big hit.
