There’s something special about a grilled cheese sandwich, it’s a comfort food that all ages can enjoy, and usually pretty cost effective. That’s why I’m sharing my favorite grilled cheese and caramelized onion sandwich also known as a French onion grilled cheese.
French Onion Grilled Cheese
I’m not usually a person who really like crazy foods, but this French onion grilled cheese has become my favorite way to eat grilled cheese. Of course I add my own little twist to the sandwich, with my cheese and bread choices, and am sharing a few of my tips for making grilled cheese. Is Mayo or Butter Better for Grilled Cheese?
I’ve been using mayo for grilled cheese for years, and really do prefer it over butter. Here’s some of the science behind why it works. The ingredients in store bought mayonnaise have a higher smoke point than butter, which means your grilled cheese lunch is more foolproof. You can cook the sandwich over (slightly) higher heat for a crisper exterior and fluffier interior, and that helps to let the cheese really melt. Mayonnaise is also way easier to spread across your bread.
Best cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich
To me one of the best things about a grilled cheese is the cheese. With so many wonderful options out there the question is often asked what’s the best cheese for grilled cheese, and I personally think it’s a combo of cheddar and gruyere together, but I’m also down for an all gruyere cheese sandwich too. A classic grilled cheese is made with American cheese and white bread (but I love sneaking in sharp cheddar too)! Real cheddar, a bit of provolone, creamy processed cheese, leftover brie from last night’s party. Any and all varieties work!
I love this sandwich and the the sweetness the caramelized onions add to it and the flavor of the cheese and bread. Don’t get me wrong I still make the kids Kraft cheese slices and white bread, but it’s nice to switch it up and indulge in this delicious sandwich.
Other Items You Can Add to Grilled Cheese
Don’t just limit yourself with cheese and bread. There’s a lot that can be added to a grilled cheese to elevate it, but it’s totally up to you, Sometimes it’s I just look around and see what I already have and add a little pizazz to my sandwich.
