I love candy, and there’s something special about retro candy and their mascots and/or name. I decided to make a DIY Mary Jane Costume to show my retro candy love!
I can remember sneaking Mary Jane candies from my grandmother and looking at the girl on the package. She was iconic with her bonnet and Mary Jane shoes. This costume is a big of nostalgia, in a good way, and super easy to create!
Mary Jane Costume
Supplies:
Mary Jane Candy
Mustard Colored Dress
Red Iron-on Letters or Red Heat Transfer Vinyl
Red Bonnet
Red Heat Transfer Vinyl
What makes this costume so simple is it’s just putting together the different pieces and adding the Mary Jane to the skirt. I used my Cricut to cut out the Mary Jane with Iron-on vinyl and put my EasyPress 2 to work. Don’t worry if you don’t have these things because you can purchase red iron-on letters and make this easily.
You can pull it together in under 30 minutes, and it works for all ages. I do recommend purchasing a bag of the candy to carry around as well. It not an easy candy to find at the store so make sure you order it in advance. Plus who doesn’t want this candy made with molasses and real peanut butter?
Some fun facts about Mary Jane Candy:
The company started in 1914, making this candy over 100 years old
It’s said that the inventor of the candy named it Mary Jane after his Aunt
An early slogan was “use your change for Mary Janes”
This will also work great with my Bazooka Joe costume for either a sibling costume or couples costume.
